VIDEO PREMIERE! Watch The Tillers Perform "Cincinnati Underworld Woman" in the latest clip

Over the past three years, Kentucky-based music entities SofaBurn Records and Candyland recording studio have been teaming up for a live performance video series called, logically, SofaBurn Presents LIVE @ Candyland.

SofaBurn is the well-distributed Northern Kentucky label that has helped give a higher profile to albums by Greater Cincinnati artists like A Delicate Motor, Lung and Jeremy Pinnell, as well as non-locals like Nashville's Benchmarks and Seattle's Your Heart Breaks. Likewise, Candyland has worked extensively with local artists (Mad Anthony, Frontier Folk Nebraska, The Dopamines and Chris Arduser, to name but a few) and established out-of-towners like The Breeders, Protomartyr, Courtney Barnett and Daikaiju. (Candyland founder and engineer Mike Montgomery's band projects Ampline and R. Ring have also released music through SofaBurn.)

Since it began, SofaBurn Presents LIVE @ Candyland has also featured a split of area acts and touring artists, from Pinnell, Mad Anthony and Daniel Martin Moore to Carson McHone, Howlin' Rain and The Messthetics (featuring the rhythm section from the legendary band Fugazi). The videos sound great and are artfully shot in black-and-white, directed by Patrick Hague and with Montgomery handling the audio.

“The idea behind our (series) was that we saw an opportunity to engage and work with artists that we respect and admire," SofaBurn founder Chris Mueller says. "We also saw an opportunity for our own artists to spend some time recording and releasing content that may not otherwise fit their current project.”

CityBeat's thrilled to premiere the latest clip in the series, featuring Cincinnati Folk music favorites The Tillers, whose self-titled LP was recorded at Candland and released last year on SofaBurn. For the video, the quartet chose to perform an obscure 90-year-old song by a jug-band Blues artist from the Queen City, whom they discovered thanks to another Cincinnati music cornerstone.

“'Cincinnati Underworld Woman' was recorded in 1929 by Cincinnati Blues musician Bob Coleman," Tiller Sean Geil says. "We heard it on Play it Like You Did Back To George Street, a Cincinnati Blues compilation released by Shake It Records in 2012, and decided to put our own spin on it."
